Gebera Giant Spinners: Gerbera do not like wet soil conditions and foliage will yellow with constant damp soils. Water thoroughly and maintain soil at constant just moist level. Maintain pH at 5.5 to 5.7 because Iron and Manganese deficiencies will occur above 6.0. Gallon, large Patio Containers and mixed patio containers. Full to part sun
Thuja occidentalis 'Filiformis' - Weeping Threadleaf Arborvitae: 3-6’ H x 3-4’ W, Zone 2-9, Full sun to part shade Very unusual golden rope-like leaves droop to the ground. Forms a slow growing haystack like mound about 3-4’ in ten years. So unusual in form and foliage that the average gardener will not be able to guess what it is? This plant is a true curiosity and a valuable landscape element. The weeping top is grafted on a regular old very hardy arborvitae. Flushes out golden in the spring and greens up as the weather warms.
Diervilla Cool Splash: 3-4’ H x 2-4’ W, Zone 4-8, Sun to part shade, Yellow flower, variegated foliage
Developed by the LPDC and released in spring 2009 under the Plants That Work brand – Novalis. This shrub is a fast growing, quite hardy and very attractive shrub with striking foliage of leaves with green centers and white margins. This locally developed hybrid comes from the native Diervilla sessilifolia.
Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Gold Charm' - Gold Charm Falsecypres: 5-6’ H x 7-8’ W, Zone 4-8, Sun to part shade
Fun evergreen with an edge. Bright golden-yellow juvenile foliage on a compact shrub. It is a slow grower & suggests height of 5-6’ with a spread of 7, but I have never seen one that large in Minnesota.
Hydrangea macrophylla Twist N Shout: 3-5’ H x 3-5’ W, Zone 4-9, Part Shade, Pink flower-alkaline soils, Blue flower-acidic soils, repeat bloomer all season, Red/burgundy fall foliage Twist-n-Shout™ produces rich rose-pink lacecap inflorescences from summer to the first frost. This hydrangea also has pink-red stems, dark green foliage that turns orange to rose-pink to red-purple in fall, and high mildew resistance. This hydrangea will be marketed by Bailey Nurseries, Inc. under the Endless Summer brand as Endless Summer Twist-n-Shout™. First in the series was Endless Summer The Original, then Endless Summer Blushing Bride and now Twist N Shout. It does not appreciate sandy soils and will not scorch if it only receives morning sun. It is suggested to mulch in summer and in winter.
Ipomoea Sweet Caroline Series: Potato vine with ground breaking genetics. Plants in this series are not as aggressive & will not over take containers or window boxes. They also do not form the tuber or potato & thus do not create root bound conditions as readily. Full sun to part shade.
Corylus avellana 'Contorta' (Harry Lauder’s walking stick, Corkscrew hazel): 8-10’ H x 8-10’ W, Zone 3-9, Full sun
Slow grower, upright, tree-like shrub has heart-shaped, toothed, mid-green leaves. Pendent yellow catkins are borne in late winter and early spring. Strongly twisted, spiraling shoots provide year-round interest. It is an excellent specimen tree that looks its best in the winter. Use shoots in floral arrangements.
